Carl XI Restrike Riksdaler 1676-Dated MS66★ NGC, Stockholm mint, KM280, Dav-4538, AAH-52b. Early 19th-century restrike from original dies. Truly a 'wonder' coin, even given that the present specimen is a restrike of the original, a fact which itself speaks to what must have been the immense desirability of this type well after it was initially issued. The period of the late 17th to the early 18th century in Sweden was one that had been dominated by the silver Carolin or 2 Mark piece, with the larger, full-bodied Riksdalers only produced on very rare occasions and in very limited numbers--1676 being the sole year of Carl XI's reign when the denomination was minted, and at a paltry figure of 791 pieces. Whether the issue was restruck in the early 1800s from the original dies, and then again in 1909, to meet collector demand or for other purposes is unclear, yet nonetheless it has permitted a much deeper appreciation for the engraving of Anton Meybusch--so many of the originals coming down to the present day in heavily worn condition, not aided by their shallow strikes. Certainly deserving of its 'star' designation for stellar eye appeal, this specimen bears medallic detail, luster rolling over the surfaces even while the dies show heavy strain and mild rust. A gorgeous coin by all measures, and one that is not to go overlooked. We note that while the holder designates this coin as a 1909 restrike, Ahlström, Almer, and Hemmingsson mention the existence of both early 19th-century and 1909 restrikes for the issue, the diagnostics they provide for the former (the latter is not illustrated) matching the features seen on this coin.Ex.
