Bern. City Taler 1798 MS67 Prooflike NGC, cf. KM165 (unlisted in Proof), Dav-1760B, HMZ-2-218f. Variety with thinner soldier. An instant classic of Swiss coinage. Few designs in the Swiss series provide a better canvass for unusually fine strikings than the late 18th-century Talers of Bern; owing largely to their recessed centers, which act as wells for reflective finish on high-grade examples, and often heavily die-polished peripheries. Indeed the current selection is one of only 4 Prooflike-certified talers of this date at NGC, with none ranking finer. For comparison, the D. Moore specimen, admittedly the more common wider soldier variety, graded MS67 'star' and achieved $6462 in our January 2017 NYINC sale.
