Description
Sensational Near-Gem Graubunden 16 Franken
Mintage Est. 100
Graubunden. Canton gold 16 Franken (Duplone) 1813 MS64 PCGS,
KM10, Fr-265, HMZ-2602a. A classic gold rarity of Switzerland,
produced not long after Graubunden received cantonal status in the
Act of Mediation and along with it, the right to strike its own
coinage. Struck from gold taken from the nearby Calanda mountain
range, the exact mintage is unknown, but the general consensus is
around 100 coins. As such, an example in any condition is highly
coveted and the near-Gem on offer here is certain to not
disappoint. Fully struck over both sides, the design rises
prominently from the glassy fields and the prooflike reflectivity
contained within sets the two in evident cameo contrast. As the
grade would suggest, very limited handling is visible to the naked
eye, with magnified inspection confirming the most prominent
"disturbance" being an as-made lintmark in the field to the left of
the date. Interestingly, the dies show significant rotation from
standard coin or medallic format, and one has to wonder how, on a
coin of such limited production, this came to be. Currently the
single finest example of the type certified at PCGS and unsurpassed
in grade at NGC. A coin of monumental and undeniable importance and
certainly among the most exciting coins inside this exceptional
Redwood Collection. From the Redwood Collection of Swiss Coins
