The Lowest Mintage of the Gondo-Gold Issues
Confederation "Gondo-Gold" 20 Francs 1895-B MS62 PCGS, Bern mint, a small cross countermark in the center of the reverse arms, KM31.3, Fr-498, HMZ 2-1194j, Divo Proben-28. A definitive rarity within the Swiss 20 Francs series, this selection was was struck using gold that came from the Gondo mine in Canton Valais and features the stately image of a crowned Helvetia and a small cross countermark centered within the reverse shield. Coins produced with this gold often show an olive cast, due to the combination of .900 fine gold mixed with copper containing a trace amount of silver. This particular date asserts a mere mintage of 19 pieces, which is the lowest mintage notated for coins struck with Gondo gold (the 1893 20 Francs has a mintage of 25 pieces and the 1897 Vreneli type numbers to 29.) The overall appeal of this coin is further strengthened with a quick rotation under the light, as the open fields brighten with sparkling mint luster and the boldly rendered design illustrations show elevated detail throughout. A few inconsequential wisps line the reflective fields, none of which impede the surface, but the eye remains focused on the central motifs. An outstanding example of this type that will bring a heightened level of prestige to its next cabinet.Auction Info
