Description

(1834-37) C. Bechtler Five Dollar, AU50
RUTHERFORD., Plain Edge, K-17
140 Grains, 20 Carats

(1834-37) $5 C. Bechtler Five Dollar, RUTHERFORD, Plain Edge, AU50 PCGS. CAC. K-17, R.4. A charming Bechtler family type coin. Well made with good centering, an even strike, and no indication of buckling. The caramel-gold surfaces are free from any distracting abrasions, and show orange-red hues in protected regions. A clue to its rustic origins is the use of an inverted V punch in place of the letter A. Christopher Bechtler was the founder of the family private mint in North Carolina. After his passing, his son Augustus continued operations for several years. Listed on page 390 of the 2026 Guide Book.
