    Description

    A. Bechtler Half Eagle, 128G. 22C., AU50
Anomalous R.6 22-Carat CAROLINA GOLD Type

(1837-42) $5 A. Bechtler Five Dollar, 128G. 22C. AU50 PCGS. K-28, R.6. CAROLINA GOLD, No Star in Center, RUTHERFORD. The A. Bechtler K-28 half eagle variety is very rare and somewhat anomalous within the Bechtler series as the only 22-carat gold issue with the CAROLINA GOLD stamp. The Sixth Series C. Bechtler coins were struck in 22-carat gold, but they all bear the GEORGIA GOLD stamp (K-11 and K-12 quarter eagles, K-21 through K-23 half eagles). PCGS has seen only 14 submissions of this issue in all grades, including possible duplications, and a sole MS61 piece crosses the Mint State threshold. This AU50 PCGS coin is one of three submissions in this grade with five finer (3/14). The sandy-gold surfaces display a bold strike along with minimal marks and light wear consistent with the grade, making this quite an attractive example. Listed on page 379 of the 2014 Guide Book.
