    C. Bechtler Five Dollar, 134G.
    With Star, AU55

    Attractive Orange-Gold Surfaces

(1837-42) $5 C. Bechtler Five Dollar, 134G, With Star AU55 PCGS. K-20, R.4. Fifth Series: CAROLINA GOLD, 26.8 grains per dollar, 21 carats. The Fifth Series C. Bechtler coinage based on a 21-carat standard was struck from around 1837 to 1842, the year in which the elder Christopher Bechtler died. Christopher Bechtler Sr.'s son Augustus died soon after, in 1846. Christopher Sr.'s nephew, Christopher Jr., continued striking coins through the late 1840s and possibly into the early 1850s. PCGS identifies these half eagle C. Bechtler coins as "134 Star," signifying the large star separating the weight from the gold purity of 21 carats. This Choice AU example displays attractive surfaces, with orange-gold in the fields ceding to deep lilac-purple hues around the peripheral devices on each side. Certified in an early blue-label PCGS holder (PCGS 6, November-December 1998 only) with bar code on the reverse. The K-20 variety, the most accessible of the Bechtler half eagles, is listed on page 378 of the 2014 Guide Book. Population: 16 in 55, 6 finer (3/14).
