Description

Mint State K-20 C. Bechtler Five Dollar

(1837-42) $5 C. Bechtler Five Dollar, 134G, With Star MS61 PCGS. K-20, R.4. Since Bechtler coins lack motifs, the selection of obverse and reverse is almost arbitrary. For the five dollar pieces, the Guide Book and the Kagin standard reference generally list the side with BECHTLER as the reverse, although the grading services are less consistent in their placement. The BECHTLER side of the present piece features deep cherry-red and cobalt-blue toning, although the centers remain green-gold. The weight and fineness side has consistent straw-gold color. Luster dominates the legends, and abrasions are minor, limited to a thin diagonal mark beneath the prominent 5 and a few wispy marks above 134 G. Listed on page 350 of the 2008 Guide Book.
