Description

    C. Bechtler Gold Dollar, AU55
    Popular N Reversed Variety

(1837-42) G$1 C. Bechtler Dollar, N Reversed AU55 NGC. K-4, R.4. Seventh Series: CAROLINA, BECHTLER (no initial), RUTHERF:, 28 grains per dollar, 20 carats. The Seventh Series quarter eagles, K-13, show CAROLINA GOLD, while the smaller one dollar coins offer CAROLINA. The quaint N Reversed variety is well-known and a sought-after variety. The Bechtler family made their first one dollar coins, the Third Series K-1 variety, in the winter of 1831-32 (and continuing through August 1834) according to Donald Kagin, nearly two decades before the denomination would issue from the U.S. Mint. Both the K-1 and K-4 varieties are ranked R.4 or very scarce, making them among the more available Bechtler types. The earlier one dollar coins used a 30-grain standard at 20 carats, while these post-1834 pieces used the lighter-weight 28-grain standard at 20 carats. This attractive, lightly circulated coin is free of major marks and shows an interesting two-toned color palette, light yellow-gold devices contrasting against copper-lilac fields. Listed on page 377 of the 2014 Guide Book.
