    Description

    A. Bechtler Five Dollar, 134G. 21C., AU53
    Rare Late Bechtler Half Eagle

(1842-52) $5 A. Bechtler Five Dollar, 134G. 21C. AU53 PCGS. K-27, Low R.5. CAROLINA GOLD, No Star in Center, RUTHERFORD. The Kagin-27 A. Bechtler half eagle was struck in 134 grains of 21-carat gold. While rare, the Kagin-27 is the only A. Bechtler half eagle that is occasionally available. The remaining three A. Bechtler half eagle issues are each R.6 or higher. This AU53 PCGS example of the K-27 shows good eye appeal on deep orange-yellow surfaces that blend into deeper reddish-orange patina around the edges of the lettering. Like several others in this marvelous Bechtler consignment, this coin is certified in an early blue-label PCGS holder (PCGS 6, November-December 1998 only) with bar code on the reverse. PCGS has seen six submissions in this grade with four AU55 and one AU58 finer; none are known in Mint State at PCGS (3/14). Listed on page 378 of the 2014 Guide Book.
    From The Riverboat Collection. (NGC ID# 2B9Y, PCGS# 10046)
