(1842-52) $5 A. Bechtler Five Dollar, 134G. 21C. AU58 NGC.
K-27, Low R.5. Moderately abraded with tinges of reddish patina at
the margins. Much semi-reflective luster survives in the protected
areas. Produced by August Bechtler circa 1842-1846 and an important
companion piece to the half eagles produced at the Charlotte Mint
during this era. So respected was Bechtler coinage that many
pre-Civil War Southern contracts specified payment in Bechtler
gold. Listed on page 359 of the 2009 Guide Book. Census: 10
in 58, 2 finer (7/08).
