    AU53 A. Bechtler Dollar, 27G. 21C., K-24

(1842-52) G$1 A. Bechtler Dollar, 27G. 21C., Plain Edge AU53 PCGS. K-24, R.3. The Bechtler family struck the first Territorial gold coins in the United States for two decades, from 1831 until 1852, with two generations sharing the family business. The opening of branch mints in North Carolina and Georgia in 1838, however, decreased the demand for private gold coinage. This piece offers a clean appearance, with lustrous, greenish-gold surfaces that are somewhat prooflike and show relatively few abrasions for the grade, save for a single old, toned-over scrape on the lower reverse through the C in CAROLINA and 21C. Certified in a small-size first-generation PCGS holder, and listed on page 359 of the 2009 Guide Book. (NGC ID# 2B99, PCGS# 10040)
