    Description

Desirable 1842-52 A. Bechtler Dollar, Plain Edge, MS63

(1842-52) G$1 A. Bechtler Dollar, 27G. 21C., Plain Edge MS63 NGC. Kagin-24, R.3. This variety is distinguished from K-25 by its plain edge. The first coins struck by the Bechtlers were minted in Rutherford County, North Carolina in 1830 by Christopher Bechtler. Preempting the U.S. Mint by 18 years, the Bechtlers began to strike gold dollars in 1831 and continued to produce them until the mint's close in 1852. In 1842, Christopher's son August took over the operations, hence the A. Bechtler that appears on the coins from the mint's final decade. Charming lemon-yellow patina drapes the surfaces of this minimally marked specimen. Several letters of Carolina are a trifle soft, but the rest of the details are bold. This attractive example is an excellent representative of this popular and numismatically important mint. Listed on page 359 of the 2009 Guide Book. (NGC ID# 2B99, PCGS# 10040)
