Description

    A. Bechtler Gold Dollar, K-24
    27G. 21C., Lustrous MS64
    The Finest Certified Specimen

(1842-52) G$1 A. Bechtler Dollar, 27G. 21C., Plain Edge MS64 NGC. K-24, R.3. Famed collector George Walton is today so well-known for his famous (and real) 1913 Liberty Head nickel in the present auction that it overshadows his other collecting feats, both inside (and far outside of) the realm of coins. Having spent much of his life in the Southeast, including Florida, Virginia, and North Carolina, Walton had the Territorial gold coins of the Bechtlers among his specialties. At the time of his death, Walton owned some 252 examples of the Bechtler one, two and a half, and five dollar coinage. The Bechtler coinage was so well-accepted in the Southeast that it actually paved the way for the opening of the federal branch mints in Charlotte and Dahlonega in 1838.

The K-24 variety with 27G. 21C. is among the more available varieties, but this near-Gem is at the high end of the certified populations; most average Choice AU, and this specimen is the finest and only MS64 certified at NGC or PCGS. This piece displays excellent mint luster over greenish-gold surfaces that attest to a high silver content. The dies were advanced, showing some dishing, die cracks, and die rust, and the planchet shows a few laminations and other surface irregularities, but most of the surface impairments seem to have occurred at (or before) striking. Census: 1 in 64, 0 finer (3/13). (NGC ID# 2B99, PCGS# 10040)
