1849 Moffat Five, VF30
Scarce K-4a Variety

1849 $5 Moffat & Co. Five Dollar VF30 PCGS. K-4a, R.4. The die break from E in FIVE to DO in DOL identifies the late die state K-4a variety. This moderately worn VF30 example retains much interior design detail and the pleasing orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded for the grade. These early five dollar gold pieces were designed to mimic Federal half eagles by Moffat & Co. chief engraver Albert Kuner. The coins were redeemable at par and circulated in California until the late 1850s. Listed on page 410 of the 2025 Guide Book. PCGS Population (all varieties combined): 16 in 30, 108 finer (5/25).
