Description

1849 Norris, Gregg, & Norris Five Dollar, MS62
Reeded Edge, Period, K-4, R.4

1849 $5 Norris, Gregg, & Norris Five Dollar R.E. MS62 PCGS. Period, K-4, R.4. This is a typically well struck example of the Norris, Gregg & Norris five dollar issue of 1849. Still lustrous and nicely preserved, the piece displays rich greenish-gold coloration and just a handful of small marks on each side. This coinage was hailed in the Alta California newspaper issue of May 31, 1849, making it the first private coinage to be publicly acknowledged in the Gold Rush territory. According to California Coiners and Assayers, by Dan Owens: "The appearance of Norris, Gregg, & Norris $5 pieces signaled a cascade of gold issues from different bankers, assayers, and other firms which would continue until 1855." Listed on page 360 of the 2009 Guide Book.
