1850 Mormon Five Dollar, AU55+
Rare Utah Territorial Issue, K-5

1850 $5 Mormon Five Dollar AU55+ NGC. K-5, High R.5. Literally driven to what was believed to be the "ends of the earth" in the early to mid-1800s, the Mormons gathered together under Brigham Young's leadership to settle in the "State of Deseret" (Utah Territory), which became the Mormon homeland beyond the western border of the United States. The region's proximity to the California gold fields were visited by returning Mormon soldiers from the Mexican War and the Mormons were among California's most successful prospectors. The first coins struck from California gold were not struck in California, but in Utah Territory in 1848 by what would become the Deseret Mint. A small mintage of ten dollar gold pieces was followed by quarter eagles and half eagles in 1849. By 1850, new dies and crucibles allowed an estimated mintage of 4,000 five dollar gold pieces, from which perhaps 50 to 75 examples exist today in private hands. These scarce Territorial gold pieces have an average grade of XF to low About Uncirculated, with only a handful of survivors recorded in full Mint State. The present coin is a high-end Choice About Uncirculated example with attractive orange-gold surfaces and considerable mint luster that gleams from the well-defined obverse depicting the usual Mormon devices of an all-seeing eye beneath a mitre, with the mitre's lower edge typically weak. On the reverse, the clasped hands of friendship are bold and the outer legends on both sides are sharply brought up. A few light abrasions exist on both sides, including a curved pinscratch between G.S. of G.S. of G.S.L.C.P.G. (Great Salt Lake City Pure Gold). Listed on page 402 of the 2026 Guide Book. NGC Census: 7 in 55 (1 in 55+), 13 finer (12/25).
