    Description

1851 Humbert Reeded Edge Fifty, XF40
    880 Thous., K-5, Appealing Coin

1851 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, Reeded Edge, 880 Thous., K-5, Low R.5, XF40 PCGS. No 50 on Reverse. The Humbert Reeded Edge fifty dollar octagonal slugs may be thought of as a second-generation issue; even though they were struck in 1851, the same year as the cumbersome Lettered Edge fifties, they represent a great technological leap over the labor-intensive first-generation coins, which required many manual processes to create each piece. This XF40 PCGS example of the K-5 variety will represent a great entry point to this historic series for collectors who nonetheless wish to avoid the pricey Mint State and higher AU levels. This medium khaki-gold coin displays relatively few marks on the reverse. A few ticks, a scrape, and a couple of rim bumps are unavoidable for a coin of this type with 20 points of wear, but the essential appeal and collectibility remain quite high. Listed on page 385 of the 2016 Guide Book. (NGC ID# ANH8, PCGS# 10211)
