    1851 Humbert Fifty, Choice VF
    Reeded Edge, 880 Thous., K-5

1851 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, Reeded Edge, 880 Thous. VF35 PCGS. K-5, Low R.5. Bulky and inconvenient as the octagonal Humbert fifty dollar "ingots" might have been, they were more reliable as currency than uncoined gold and so were spent during the California Gold Rush. This Choice VF example was struck from a heavily polished obverse die that leaves the ribbon in disconnected strands and the eagle's left (facing) wing detached from the rest of the body. Moderately worn with scattered old abrasions on its yellow-gold surfaces, this piece nonetheless retains considerable majesty and eye appeal. A handful of small as-struck voids are noted at the right obverse. Listed on page 381 of the 2014 Guide Book.
