    1851 Humbert Fifty, XF40
Popular K-6, Reeded Edge, 887 Thous Variety

1851 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, Reeded Edge, 887 Thous. XF40 PCGS. CAC. K-6, R.4. The iconic Humbert octagonal fifty-dollar slugs have become more symbolic of the Gold Rush era than any other issue in the minds of most collectors. They were struck under the auspices of the United States Assay Office, with Augustus Humbert as assayer. The Reeded Edge fifty dollar slugs were much more efficient than their older Lettered Edge counterparts from a production stand point, as the Lettered Edge specimens required impressing the appropriate lettering into each individual side in eight separate operations. The K-6 variety shows the outer ribbon on the reverse close to the edge.

The present coin is an attractive XF specimen, with light wear on the well-detailed design elements and pleasing orange-gold surfaces that show only minor abrasions. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 16 in 40, 52 finer (1/16).

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 6J5M, PCGS# 10214)
