    Description

1852 United States Assay Office Ten Dollar
    K-12a(2), Ex: SSCA, AU50

1852 $10 Assay Office Ten Dollar AU50 PCGS. K-12a(2), R.4. Ex: S.S. Central America. SSCA 7101. Variety K-12a with the UNITED STATES ASSAY OFFICE reverse is identified by the N directly over the O. This late die state example has indistinct beading around the reverse border. These coins were struck under the auspices of the United State Assay Office of Gold with principals Curtis, Perry, and Ward, who had taken over control of the firm from John L. Moffat. The coins were critical to the local economy in the years before the opening of the San Francisco Mint. This bright yellow-gold survivor is strongly detailed with typical strike softness on the eagle's wingtips and leg. Partial luster remains. A scattering of abrasions is entirely normal, and none of them are singularly distracting. Listed on page 399 of the 2019 Guide Book.
