Description

1852 Assay Office Eagle, MS62
K-12a, Middle Die State

1852 $10 Assay Office Ten Dollar MS62 NGC. K-12a, R.4. The 1852 U.S. Assay Office took over the operations of Moffat & Co. after that firm was dissolved in 1852, and the Assay Office issued ten dollar gold coins in 1852 and 1853 before the U.S. Mint opened in 1854. The 1852-dated .884 fine coins are seen more frequently than their 1853-dated counterparts, which come in .884 and .900 fineness. This MS62 1852 Assay Office ten is the K-12a variant showing the O in OFFICE under N of UNITED; the other K-12 variant, with O under I, is exceedingly rare. The dentilation is much stronger on the obverse than on the reverse, but there are only minor marks for the assigned grade. Golden-orange surfaces show some wispy die cracks on each side, evidence of die fatigue. Listed on page 379 of the 2013 Guide Book. Census: 11 in 62, 6 finer (3/13). Census: 11 in 62, 6 finer (3/13). (NGC ID# ANGV, PCGS# 10001)
