Description

Well-Struck, Unabraded 1852 Humbert
Ten Dollar, K-10a, AU50

1852 $10 Humbert Ten Dollar AU50 PCGS. K-10a, Low R.4. This is among the first 1852 U.S. Assay Office tens, issued before John Little Moffat retired, after which the reverse legend was changed to begin UNITED STATES ASSAY OFFICE. The reverse here reads, in full, AUGUSTUS HUMBERT / UNITED STATES ASSAYER / OF GOLD CALIFORNIA / 1852. The Y in ASSAYER is over the space between NI of UNITED on the reverse, identifying the K-10 dies. This late-state example shows the extensive die crumbling on the obverse that merits the IINITED moniker. This lovely orange-gold piece shows few abrasions for the grade and excellent eye appeal, a well-struck and pleasing specimen. Listed on page 369 of the 2011 Guide Book.
From The Classic Collection. (NGC ID# ANGG, PCGS# 10187)
