    Description

    1852 Humbert Ten Dollar
    884 Fineness, MS61

    Very Rare Uncirculated Example

1852 $10 Humbert Ten Dollar MS61 PCGS. K-10a, R.4. Moffat & Co., in its role as semiofficial branch mint and United States Assay Office of Gold in California, struck both overdated (1852/1) and normal-date 1852 ten dollar gold pieces of 884 fineness using the Humbert nameplate on the reverse. This example of the non-overdated variety shows several small peripheral die cracks typical of the late die state: through UNITED, the wing tip, and STA; from the F to the wing tip; through MERICA and the following period; and through DOLS. The sandy-gold surfaces show only small contact marks consistent with the grade, fewer than might be expected, and the eye appeal is excellent. Most survivors are well circulated, and true Uncirculated examples are rare. Only six coins have been graded MS61 or MS62 at both services. PCGS has graded two in MS61 and two in MS62 (2/14) with none higher. NGC has only certified one each in MS61 and MS62. The sole coin graded higher is the amazing Newman MS68, a possible specimen, which we sold for over $1 million (4/13). The present example is seemingly undervalued in today's marketplace. Listed on page 382 of the 2014 Guide Book.
