    1852 Moffat Ten Dollar, K-8, Fine 12

1852 $10 Moffat & Co. Ten Dollar Fine 12 PCGS. Narrow date, K-8, R.6. Moffat & Co. was among the early coiners of California private gold issues, and they are known to have made more than 8,000 examples of this five dollar issue early in 1852 in response to a plea from local businessmen. This piece is the Narrow Date variant, although both subtypes appear about equally rare. The surfaces are brownish gold, with grade-consistent wear more extensive on the obverse than on the reverse. Certified in a green-label holder, and listed on page 361 of the 2009 Guide Book.
