    Description

1852 Assay Office Fifty Dollar, AU Details
K-11, 887 Thous., Popular Octagonal 'Slug'

1852 $50 Assay Office Fifty Dollar, 887 Thous. -- Surfaced Tooled -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. K-11, R.5. The PCGS number ending in .98 suggests Damage as the reason, or perhaps one of the reasons, that PCGS deemed this coin not gradable. In our opinion, this coin has the details of an AU specimen that has been tooled. Yellow-gold surfaces display signs of smoothing to minimize the numerous heavy abrasions often found on these large fifty dollar gold ingots. Detail remains strong, with bold definition on the eagle, legends, and the reverse engine turning. These United Assay Office fifty dollar gold coins, though inconvenient for normal circulation, represented the closest thing to a circulating federal medium before the opening of the San Francisco Mint in 1854. Their iconic octagonal shape has been popular with collectors for the past 170 years, and served as inspiration for the 1915-S Panama-Pacific fifties. Listed on page 404 of the 2020 Guide Book.
