    Description

    1852 U.S. Assay Office Fifty, AU50
    Emergency 900 Thous., K-14 Issue

1852 $50 Assay Office Fifty Dollar, 900 Thous. AU50 NGC. K-14, High R.5. Congress passed a bill on August 31, 1852 that prohibited the acceptance of gold coins of less than 900 fineness for customs duties. This action effectively robbed California of the greatest part of the circulating coinage in the regional economy. As an emergency measure, the United States Assay Office struck many 1852-dated fifty dollar slugs of the new fineness in early 1853, with 13,000 pieces struck in January and 10,000 more in February of that year.

This attractive AU example displays lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces that retain significant amounts of original mint luster. Just a touch of wear is evident on the well-detailed design elements and eye appeal is quite strong. Listed on page 383 of the 2014 Guide Book. Census: 4 in 50, 39 finer (4/14).
