1852 Assay Office Fifty Dollar, AU Details
900 Thous., K-14, Iconic Gold Rush Issue

1852 $50 Assay Office Fifty Dollar, 900 Thous. -- Repaired -- NGC Details. AU. K-14, High R.5. This is one of the iconic United States Assay Office ingots or "slugs" that came to define a transformational period in American history -- the California Gold Rush. Like so many Western products of the period, the 900 Thous. fifties were an emergency coinage issue deployed as a response to legislation requiring all customs duties to be paid in coins of at least .900 fine gold. Backdated to 1852, the 23,000 examples were actually manufactured in January and February 1853. This heavily abraded yellow-gold AU representative shows strong legends and mostly clear engine turning. The central part of the eagle is soft, and the corners have been smoothed and sharpened to eliminate bumps. Listed on page 404 of the 2020 Guide Book.
