    Description

    1852 Humbert Octagonal Fifty, AU50
    Reeded Edge, 887 Thous., K-11

1852 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, Reeded Edge, 887 Thous., AU50 NGC. K-11, R.5. Kagin-11 is the final octagonal fifty issued by the U.S. Assay Office of Gold under the direction of Moffat & Co., with the legend AUGUSTUS / HUMBERT / UNITED / STATES / ASSAYER / OF GOLD / CALIFORNIA / 1852 encircling the eight-sided margin. On subsequent issues (under Curtis, Perry & Ward), wording was changed to: UNITED / STATES / ASSAY / OFFICE / OF GOLD / SAN FRANCISCO / CALIFORNIA / 1852. Some other minor design changes were made upon the retirement of Moffat from the U.S. Assay Office in February 1852.

The Assay Office of Gold minted a vast number of fifty dollar pieces throughout 1852, but most were melted once the San Francisco Mint began producing Federal gold coins two years later. This is a splendid About Uncirculated K-11 example, with lemon-gold color and orange accents surrounding the eagle motif. The obverse has a few delicate hairlines and tiny marks, and the rims show some minor knocks, but luster lingers within the wings and legends, and the "target" reverse is especially sharp. Listed on page 402 of the 2020 Guide Book. (NGC ID# ANKE, PCGS# 10217)
