Description

1853 Assay Office Twenty, AU53
900 Thous., Kagin-18
Final Issue From Facility

1853 $20 Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 900 Thous. AU53 PCGS. K-18, R.2. Kagin-18 was the sole fully hubbed variety from the San Francisco Assay Office. It was a high-mintage issue, produced in the millions, though most were eventually melted and recoined as double eagles. This lightly circulated caramel-gold example escaped the smelter, and is pleasing aside from a few short vertical marks on the upper left scrollwork on the reverse. Listed on page 394 of the 2026 Guide Book.
