    1853 Assay Office Twenty, K-18, MS63
    Popular Territorial Gold Type

1853 $20 Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 900 Thous. MS63 PCGS. K-18, R.2. The U.S. Assay Office produced twenty dollar coins dated 1853 with both the 884 THOUS. and 900 THOUS. finenesses. The K-17 884 THOUS. coins are very rare, however, while the 900 THOUS. pieces are far more available -- although quite popular as Territorial type coins to represent the Humbert/U.S. Assay Office pieces. All of the 900 THOUS. coins are technically "overfinenesses," 900 over 880, but the underdigits faded from the (many) dies with continued striking. This Select example boasts lovely orange-gold color over surfaces that show few abrasions and a bold strike. Portions of the 880 are clear with a loupe. Listed on page 371 of the 2012 Guide Book. Population: 31 in 63, 25 finer (3/12). (NGC ID# ANHD, PCGS# 10013)
