1855 Wass, Molitor Ten Dollar, AU50
    K-6, Scarce Emergency Issue

1855 $10 Wass Molitor AU50 NGC. K-6, High R.5. Hungarian emigres Samuel Wass and Agoston Molitor established themselves as reputable coiners and assayers in California during the early 1850s. They were petitioned to once again supply coinage in 1855 to satisfy the needs of commerce -- needs that were not being met by the fledgling San Francisco Mint. It is likely that Wass, Molitor used a ten dollar die from 1852 to create their new 1855 issue, drilling out the last digit and replacing it with a 5. Kagin explains they had done this previously: "A close look at the obverse of their $10 issues of 1852 reveals that the last digit, probably a '1,' had been drilled out of the original die and a '2' plugged into its space." The plugged 5 is clear on this minimally circulated yellow-gold representative. Both sides show a normal soft strike, especially the reverse. A deep, semicircular planchet flaw occurs on the upper part of the shield. It does not affect the grade, and this remains a nice example of a challenging and well-known Gold Rush emergency issue. Listed on page 410 of the 2020 Guide Book.
