1855 Wass Molitor Ten Dollar, AU50
    An S.S. Central America Treasure

1855 $10 Wass Molitor Ten Dollar AU50 PCGS. K-6, High R.5. Ex: S.S. Central America. SSCA 7289. While the gold recovered from the S.S. Central America is most famous for gleaming new 1857-S double eagles and massive assayer ingots, there is a poignancy to pieces such as this Wass Molitor ten dollar piece. A private coin from the last great era of such issues, struck after the opening of the San Francisco Mint, it likely was not part of a commercial shipment but instead was part of a private fortune lost at sea. The coin itself is softly struck and textured gold, luminous with only light wear but a number of minor marks and scrapes that contribute to the grade. As an AU50 example, it is a higher-end survivor of the rare 1855 Wass Molitor ten, and it has a strange and sad history: perhaps two years above ground, followed by more than a century at the bottom of the ocean. The lot comes with a certificate of authenticity and faux-book case. Listed on page 385 of the 2013 Guide Book. Population: 11 in 50, 16 finer (9/12).
