Very Rare, High Grade 1855 Wass Molitor Ten Dollar, Near-Mint Example

1855 $10 Wass Molitor Ten Dollar AU58 PCGS. Ex: Central America. K-6, R.7. According to the data from PCGS and NGC, this Wass must be one of the finest known of this rare variety. This is the only example graded AU58 by either service (3/02). Only one piece is finer, an NGC MS61. This elusive and popular variety shows a curious surface die anomaly--the second 5 in the date appears to have been drilled out and replaced, a 2 was probably removed from the die which was made up three years previously. The obverse and reverse are styled after the contemporary American Eagle but with several differences in the inscriptions as well as rather pronounced design differences on the central motifs. When found, this variety is usually only encountered in low grades, e.g., the Garrett specimen was only VF20. This specimen displays a nice strike and very little evidence of wear. A few small abrasions are present, and the overall luster quality is excellent. A very rare opportunity to acquire one of the finest examples of this key territorial issue that has the added allure of the Central America pedigree. Listed on page 297 of the 2002 Guide Book.
