Description

    1860 Clark, Gruber Eagle, K-3, AU58
    Copious Mint Luster

1860 $10 Clark, Gruber & Co. Ten Dollar AU58 NGC. CAC. K-3, R.5. Clark, Gruber & Co. produced more than one-half million dollars worth of gold coinage, yet the 1860- and 1861-dated pieces were short-lived in their production. A territorial resolution as early as 1861 favored the establishment of a federal mint in Denver, a measure favored by the principals of Clark, Gruber. But the facility would remain an assay office only for decades before the opening of the Denver Mint in 1906.

The 1860 ten and twenty dollar pieces of Clark, Gruber are especially popular for their depiction of a rather unrealistic Pike's Peak, while the smaller denominations and the 1861-dated coins more resemble U.S. federal coinage. Copious luster appears on each side of this orange-gold AU58 1860 eagle, which also boasts excellent eye appeal. A loupe reveals a few small contact marks on the reverse. Listed on page 394 of the 2014 Guide Book. Census: 22 in 58 (1 in 58+ ), 18 finer (6/13).
