Description

1860 Clark, Gruber & Co. Five, MS63
K-2, Exceptional Eye Appeal

1860 $5 Clark, Gruber & Co. Five Dollar MS63 NGC. K-2, R.4. Clark, Gruber & Co. was a pillar of banking stability in Colorado Territory and almost single-handedly created a system of exchange that resembled the early gold rush days of California. The twenty, ten, five, and two-and-a-half dollar coins became the principal currency of the territory, minted slightly over the federal standard in weight in 1860 to account for the unalloyed Pikes Peak gold, which tended to wear quickly in circulation. The 1860 five dollar gold pieces were struck from a single die marriage in higher relief than federal coinage, which the coins resembled. This Select Uncirculated example is sharply struck with lustrous green-gold surfaces and ranks close to the Condition Census for the issue. Only a few light marks dot the well-preserved fields and devices. Listed on page 423 of the 2025 Guide Book. Census: 5 in 63 (1 in 63+), 3 finer (11/24).
