Description

1861 Clark, Gruber Twenty Dollar, AU Sharpness
Copper Die Trial, Gilt, 'K-12e'

1861 $20 Clark, Gruber Twenty Dollar Copper Die Trial -- Burnished -- NGC Details. AU. "K-12e," R.6, Gilt. NGC identifies this as the Kagin-12c copper die trial, but it is from a different, unlisted reverse die with a perfect V in DENVER. This die pair is only known as a copper trial. The current piece is gilt, although most of the gold plating is effaced by the burnishing, which leaves each side with a glossy texture. Various iridescent hues appear in the coppery-brown surfaces when tilted beneath a light.
