    Copper 1861 Clark-Gruber Dies Trial
    K-10c, MS63 Brown

1861 $5 Clark, Gruber $5 Copper Die Trial MS63 Brown NGC. K-10c, R.7. A third and final variant of the 1861 five dollar. This piece is also struck in copper but has a reeded edge. The strike lacks high point definition in the center of each side, the same as a regular production gold coin would. Each side is dark brown with subtle underlying blue and rose colors that are evident when closely inspected. The only mentionable flaw is a small planchet flake out of the obverse field by star 12.
