1861 Clark, Gruber Five, MS64 Red and Brown
Copper Die Trial, K-6, Reeded Edge

1861 $5 Clark, Gruber $5 Copper Die Trial MS64 Red and Brown PCGS. K-6, Reeded Edge, R.7. A Clark, Gruber five-dollar copper die trial, struck from the regular dies with a reeded edge. Although the Clark, Gruber patterns are very rare in an absolute sense, they are among the more collectible off-metal strikings in the series. The original red surfaces of this impressive Choice example have mellowed to light brown in many areas, with minimal signs of contact. The design elements are strongly impressed and overall eye appeal is outstanding. This is currently the only example certified by PCGS, and is pictured on the CoinFacts website (1/16)
