    1861 Clark, Gruber Five Dollar
    PR63 Red and Brown
    Copper Die Trial, K-10b

1861 $5 Clark, Gruber $5 Copper Die Trial PR63 Red and Brown PCGS. K-10b, R.7. A majority of copper die trials of the 1861 Clark, Gruber five were struck with a collar and show a reeded edge (K-10c). The very rare K-10b was struck from regular obverse and reverse dies, but without a collar die. As a result, the present example is broadstruck and has a plain edge. The obverse dentils between 5 and 11 o'clock have a stretched appearance, while the obverse rim is featureless and irregular between 11 and 5 o'clock. The reverse rim shows similar characteristics, except the featureless part of the rim is between 11 and 1 o'clock. Customary for a broadstrike, the centers are well impressed. The peripheral stars and legends are also sharply struck despite minor metal flow toward the border. Toned predominantly deep brown but mint red outlines the stars and fills the legends. Unabraded and impressively preserved. Housed in a first generation holder.
