Rare 1943 New York Assay Office Gold Ingot

1943 New York Assay Office Gold Ingot. A rarely seen World War II era gold ingot from this now-obsolete assay office. The ingot measures 34mm x 55mm x 9mm. The assay office stamp is impressed evenly at the top of the front side with FINE / 999.5 below. The two short sides read: 40 0 and 967 9. The right, long side displays the weight: OZS. 11.24. The bottom of the ingot is slightly sunken, as made from its cast production, and a moderate grooved mark is seen on the edge above the 2 in the weight designation. New York City was at one time a strong candidate for a branch mint; in the early 1850s, eastern legislators delayed authorization of a San Francisco Mint, with the intention of offering a 'compromise' for both new branch mints to be established.
