    Description

(1842-52) A.Bechtler Five Dollar, 134G. 21C. AU 55 PCGS. Kagin-27, Breen 7766. Struck from rotated dies. Produced by August Bechtler ca. 1842-1846 and an important companion piece to the half eagles produced at the Charlotte Mint during this era. This example is slightly prooflike and has splashes of reddish-orange color. A rare coin in this grade.
When available, this variety tends to be found in lower grades. Most seen are in the Extremely Fine range with the occasional low-end AU available. The present example is certainly among the finest known and we cannot recall having seen a fully mint state piece, although we would not be surprised if one existed. Listed on page 273 of the 1998 Guide Book. (NGC ID# 2B9Y, PCGS# 10046)
