Description

Amazing Near-Gem 1853 Assay Office Twenty Dollar

1853 $20 Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 900 Thous. MS 64 PCGS. K-18, R.2. This coin was previously offered as lot 7623 in our Philadelphia 2000 Signature Sale, where it was cataloged as: "This is one of the most appealing representatives of this issue that we have ever offered. The scintillating luster alone would do justice to a federal gold coin struck in the 1890s. The eagle's talons are boldly defined and every last feather in the wings and on the neck is fully separated. The surfaces reveal scattered striations (as produced) under a loupe, but careful scrutiny fails to uncover any individually disturbing abrasions. Green-gold in color, this coin is a stunning numismatic monument to the bygone days of Gold Rush California." Listed on page 292 of the 2001 Guide Book. (NGC ID# ANHD, PCGS# 10013)
