    Description

(1837-42) C.Bechtler Quarter Eagle, 67G. 21C. AU 58 PCGS. Kagin-10, Breen-7753. Late die state with two cracks, as illustrated; struck from rotated dies. Beautiful, rich green-gold color hides considerable underlying luster. A small group of marks below the 1 in 21 serves as identification. Superb quality for this variety.
The only quarter eagle of this type and quickly identifiable by the use of inverted Vs in the place of As. This is a rare issue with around 50 or so known pieces in all grades. There are perhaps a dozen properly graded AU's in existence, of which just a handful grade higher than AU 55. The North Georgia Collection specimen is the best we can recall having seen and it is certainly among the best two or three known.
Last sold as lot 1416 in Stack's October 1994 James Stack Collection where it realized $5,500; earlier ex: Wayte Raymond, F.C.C. Boyd, Hillyer Ryder, and earlier lot 6378 in the fabled John Story Jenks Collection conducted by Henry Chapman in December, 1921. Listed on page 273 of the 1998 Guide Book. (NGC ID# 2B9F, PCGS# 10067)

Another major house refused the work stating it was too unique for the artist. Heritage saw that as an advantage!
