Description

(1837-42) C.Bechtler Five Dollar, 134G, With Star AU 55 PCGS. Kagin-20, Breen-7754. Struck in coin alignment; perfect dies. Superbly toned with a fiery orange-gold obverse; the reverse has a deep coppery-gold overtone with splashes of iridescent orange-gold and green. Somewhat reflective with a few old hairlines but exceptionally attractive overall and among the finest Bechtler $5s of any variety that we have seen.
This variety is very quickly identifiable by the presence of a large star below 134 G; the letter G is, in fact , a C to which a modification has been done by hand. This is far and away the most available Bechtler $5 of any variety. There are probably more than 100 pieces known with most of these grading Very Fine to Extremely Fine. In AU, this variety is a solid R.7 with around 8 to 10 pieces known. The North Georgia Collection example has to be among the finest known and certainly has great eye appeal. Listed on page 273 of the 1998 Guide Book. (NGC ID# 2B9T, PCGS# 10097)
