Description

1849 Massachusetts & California
Five Dollar Die Trial in Silver
Fine 12, Kagin-2a

1849 $5 Massachusetts and California Five Dollar, Silver Die Trial, Fine 12 NGC. Kagin-2a, High R.7. Struck from a similar but different die pair than the extremely rare gold five dollar pieces from the Massachusetts and California Company, of which just five to seven examples are known. The present dove-gray representative displays even wear and was apparently carried as a pocket piece, but all legends are bold except ALTA on the banner. No marks or planchet deficiencies are apparent. The Massachusetts & California Co. struck various specimens in Massachusetts prior to the departure to California of its officers, who intended to set up shop as private gold coiners. But there was a glut of such firms, most of whom were discredited. Instead, F.P. Tracy and Wm. H. Hayden operated a West Coast express service. Census: 1 in 12, 2 finer (11/15).
