    Description

    1852 U.S. Assay Office Fifty, XF40
    900 Thous., K-14 Variety

1852 $50 Assay Office Fifty Dollar, 900 Thous. XF40 NGC. K-14, R.5. The 900 Thous. fifty dollar gold slugs were produced by the Assay Office as an emergency measure in response to federal legislation requiring all customs duties to be paid in coins of at least .900 fineness. The coins were actually produced in January (13,800 examples) and February (10,000 examples) of 1853, but they were backdated 1852. This impressive XF example displays lightly abraded surfaces for such a large gold coin that spent time in circulation. The design elements are well-detailed and lightly worn, though some of the usual softness shows on the eagle and shield. Rim bumps are minimal and the overall presentation is most attractive. Census: 4 in 40, 45 finer (10/19). (NGC ID# ANHH, PCGS# 10019)
