1854 Kellogg & Co. Twenty, XF45
K-1b, Late Territorial Issue
1854 $20 Kellogg & Co. XF45 PCGS. K-1b, Short Arrows,
R.5. When the San Francisco Mint was authorized, the U.S. Assay
Office ceased operations at a time when no other private coiners
were produced gold coinage for the region. Due to delays at the
Federal Mint, Kellogg & Co. filled the coinage void with their
$20 gold pieces in early 1854 under Kellogg & Richter. The
following year, they produced twenty dollar gold pieces under the
operation of Kellogg & Humbert. Traces of luster remain on this
Choice XF example that saw light use at the time it was issued.
Mostly trivial marks are evident, with a few larger marks that will
help track the provenance. Listed on page 412 of the 2020 Guide
