1861 Clark, Gruber & Co. Quarter Eagle, MS61
Popular Colorado Gold Issue, K-5
1861 $2 1/2 Clark, Gruber & Co. Quarter Eagle MS61 NGC. K-5,
R.4. Clark, Gruber & Co. was easily the soundest and most
respected financial organization in Colorado's early gold rush
years. Already well established as a commodities merchant and
outfitter for the local populace and prospective miners from their
base near Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, the company was well-positioned
to establish a successful banking business in Kansas and later
expand to Denver in 1859. Their private coining business was needed
to avoid the costly, time-consuming, and dangerous transport of
gold dust to the Philadelphia Mint.In 1860 and 1861, the company's coinage operations in Denver operated 24 hours a day. In 1861, the firm's coinage was declared "to be of professed value, or slightly higher" by a Philadelphia Mint assay report. In 1863, the U.S. Government purchased Clark, Gruber's coinage operations, building, and equipment, a precursor to the Denver Mint. This Mint State quarter eagle represents one of Clark, Gruber's later issues. The well-struck greenish-gold surfaces show few marks and faint, light hairlines. Census: 13 in 61, 14 finer (10/19). (NGC ID# ANJY, PCGS# 10139)
