Description

1870 Three Cent Nickel, MS66
One Marginally Finer at PCGS

1870 3CN MS66 PCGS. A blush of warm golden toning accents frosty luster on each side of this Premium Gem example. Some of the outer wreath leaves are weakly defined due to die wear, but the central motifs on both sides are sharp.

Population Data (3/15): PCGS reports 17 in MS66 (one MS66+) with none numerically finer. NGC records 10 in this grade with two MS67 finer.

Heritage Commentary: Production of nickel three cent pieces was substantial in the first few years of the type, as it was widely distributed throughout commerce as a replacement not only for its smaller silver counterpart -- which had been actively hoarded during the Civil War -- but also for the numerous fractional currencies then in use as a substitute for commercially absent coins. However, by 1870, the need for large quantities of the denomination had been largely supplied, and only a little more than 1.3 million pieces were struck. High-end survivors of this issue are notably scarce.
